……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

There are two options when it comes to stock cabinets. Flat pack cabinets are in stock in the store and you assemble them at home. Most stores also offer a made to order product that comes already assembled. They are a great option for a cottage, basement kitchen or bar area.

discount-kitchen-cabinetsBox store  flatpack cabinets: This is really cabinetry at it’s most basic when it comes to the selection. For the base cabinets you usually only have an option for full height doors and a separate bank of drawers.  Some products may come with top drawers and full height doors on the sink cabinets. You can usually get a base and upper corner unit as well. There is no option for taller upper cabinets as they usually come in only the 30 inch high wall cabinets.

You might be able to get basic ad-ons like crown molding or light valance and the cabinets may come in a light wood grain foil as well as white melamine. The doors will come separately and you will have a choice of white, natural oak, medium oak and a few maple stains. There might also be a tall pantry unit available but only in one width.

The big challenge with this type of cabinet is fitting the manufacturer sizes into your kitchen design. You might need a 27″ cabinet and only have a 30″ available. You might want pot drawers or glass doors and find they are not available.

You need to compare the products but for my money I think Ikea is a better choice and has so many more options. Ikea kitchens also come flat packed but with the guide you find they are very easy to assemble and you will have a much better looking kitchen at a great price. Check out this page.

They still the same lack of choice though since they can only stock so much in the warehouse. For those people who can’t or don’t want to build the cabinets themselves this can be a good option. However I think it will depend on how far they have to be shipped. From my days of installing cabinets I can remember the tremendous damage that sometimes occurred when cabinets were shipped across the country and sometimes moved from one truck to another before reaching their destination. Then you have a problem getting a replacement in time for the kitchen install. You could wait for weeks for the issue to be resolved. In my experience these pre-assembled cabinets are only used by builders who want a very basic kitchen installed in a very basic house. If you live close enough to one of these manufactures and can pick up the cabinets it could be worth looking into.
